| A New Era |
The Event Centre will become a centre of regional activity, a multi-use
building designed to meet the region's requirements for sports and
recreation, active living, and community meetings, gatherings and events.
In addition to offering an ice surface for general skating, figure skating
and hockey, the Event Centre will include an indoor walking track. The
theatre will offer an appropriate setting for arts events, lectures or
seminars. This multi-use facility will also enhance the region’s ability to
host conferences and conventions.
The Event Centre will be a positive investment in healthy living and regional growth and development, adding substantially to the sustainability of the region and enhancing the quality of life for people in the area. The Centre will be located next to the Clarenville High School on Manitoba Drive, Clarenville.
The funding for the Regional Events Centre was officially announced on Friday December 28, 2007 at the Town Hall in Clarenville. The Honourable Ross Wiseman, MHA for Trinity North and Minister of Health and Community Services, joined Clarenville Mayor Fred Best and Events Centre Committee Chairperson and Town Councilor Fraser Russell to announce the funding package of nearly $15 million for the new arts centre.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, through the Dept of Municipal Affairs, will contribute 80% (approx $12 million) of the total project cost while the Town of Clarenville will be investing the remaining 20% (approx. $3 million).
The construction contract has been awarded with construction beginning March-April with completion date of September 2009.

| The Need |
Currently, the region is served by the Clarenville Stadium which was built
in 1956. The present ice-making equipment was put in the stadium in
1983 with a life expectancy of 20 years. We must act now to ensure that
future generations enjoy the active living that a new Event Centre can
offer. Physical activity is a key determinant of health, leading to healthier
individuals. |
| Progress to Date |
Working with the Event Centre Committee and led by Ron Fougere and
Associates, in partnership with Dennis Knight and Associates, M5
Marketing and Davis Engineering, a feasibility study considered the needs
of the region, the viability of all components of a new Centre and a
marketing plan. Extensive consultations occurred with the general public
as well as the sports and arts communities. During the Summer of 2006,
detailed design was completed in order to develop tender ready documents. |
