Summer Utility Worker



The Town of Clarenville and the Clarenville Area Recreation Association (CARA) are accepting resumes for two (2) Summer Utility Worker positions. Under the supervision of the Director of Recreation and the Events Center Manager, these seasonal workers will work with the other Town staff to perform various maintenance duties at the recreation facilities, trails, and open spaces throughout the Town, as well as perform various duties required during special events.

Successful applicants must have a valid drivers license, be bondable, and have a high school diploma (or equivalent). Demonstrated carpentry or mechanical skills would be a definite asset. Experience with landscaping or grounds maintenance would also be a definite asset.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Utility Worker/Recreation (seasonal)
Responsible to: Director of Recreation and Events Centre Manager
General Description:
Under the supervision of the Director of Recreation and the Events Centre Manager, the Utility Worker/Recreation will perform various grounds and facilities maintenance duties during Spring and Summer months at a number of recreation facilities and open spaces operated and maintained by the Town of Clarenville. Recreation facilities include: playgrounds, ball fields, soccer field, running track, skateboard parks, tennis courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts, walking/hiking trails, Clarenville Events Centre, Elizabeth Swan Park and Chalet, dog park, age-friendly park, etc. Open and Green Spaces include the various lawns, grassed areas, and flower gardens throughout Town.

The Utility Worker/Recreation will work under the Facilities Attendants, taking ultimate direction from Recreation Director and/or Events Centre Manager.

Duties & Responsibilities:
-Utility Worker/Recreation will primarily assist Facilities Attendants. However, from time to time, will be required to work independently, as well as with summer students and/or other special projects personnel. At times, may be required to provide general advice to summer students and special project staff. Perform maintenance, safety and repair work related to parks, open spaces and facility areas.

- Upgrading and maintenance of trail system.

- Assist Facilities Attendants with facility inspections and record keeping logs for the execution of a preventative maintenance program.

- Ensure proper use, storage, maintenance and inventory of maintenance tools and equipment.

- Ensure continuous compliance with legislation governing the operations of health & safety, accessibility and other regulatory considerations.

- Shall provide services to maintain the buildings and grounds as required such as cleaning, stocking, painting, minor repairs and other maintenance activities as required.

- Shall adhere to high standards of ethical behavior, customer service and demonstrate his/her understating that his/her personal actions impact the public?s perception of the facilities.

- Conform to established dress code, including personal protective clothing and footwear.

- Various duties that may be required during special events such as Canada Day, Clarenville Days, tournaments, etc.

- Assist in converting the Events Centre for safe and effective use for various potential functions including sport-specific and event-specific conversions (i.e. install ice-decking, glass removal, pipe & drapery set-up, stage set-up, etc.)

- Ensure that all safety procedures are followed at all times while at work.

- Operate tools/equipment in a responsible manner and protect against damage and loss

- Perform other duties as assigned by Recreation Director and Events Centre Manager.

Qualifications:
- High School diploma (or equivalent). Additional post-secondary education or specialized courses would be an asset.
- Skilled trade, such as carpentry, or mechanical and carpentry aptitude would be a definite asset.
- Good written and verbal communication skills including courtesy, tact, discretion, explanation and judgment.
- Must have a valid Driver's License

- Must be bondable
- Ability to operate equipment safely and in accordance with training, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and report any unsafe work conditions or practices to supervisor.
- Experience with landscaping or grounds maintenance experience in commercial or institutional operation such as a recreation department, golf course or landscaping company would be a definite asset.
- Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the general public.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team, and make decisions in accordance with policies and procedures.

Hours of Work:
- This position is full-time, seasonal for 16 weeks, based on 40 hours per week.
- Shift-oriented position with some evening, weekend and holiday work required
- Anticipated start date: late May or early June 2012.
- Anticipated finish date: mid September 2012.

Work Environment:
- The normal work environment will be outside in various weather conditions.
- The work will involve many physically demanding jobs such as operating equipment and tools to complete grounds maintenance tasks; raking, shoveling and digging; lifting and moving heavy objects

Wage: As per established wage scale.

Director of External Operations



The Town of Clarenville is seeking applications from qualified individuals to fill the position of Director of External Operations. This is a senior level management position, reporting directly to the CAO, with the primary responsibility of planning, organizing and directing all development and planning and public works activities.

The ideal candidate will possess a degree in civil engineering, with a minimum of five years in the municipal sector. An in depth knowledge of the goals, objectives and operations of municipal government, especially in the areas of development and outside operations is essential. Strong leadership and communication skills are also required. The successful candidate must have a valid drivers license and must be insurable under the Town?s insurance policy.

Water Treatment Plant


Applications are invited to fill one (1) full-time position at the Town's Water Treatment Plant. Minimum qualifications for this position are follows:

1. Successful completion of High School
2. Knowledge of pumps, motors, electronically controlled valves, filters, and chlorination systems.

A completed course in the operation and maintenance of a Water Filtration Plant and/or knowledge of Instrumentation Technology would be an asset.
The successful applicant will be required to work on a shift basis, including weekends and given the nature of the position should reside within close proximity of the Water Treatment Plant.

The successful applicant will be required to attend and successfully complete ongoing training and education programs.

Salary and benefits will be as per current Collective Working Agreement.
