On September 24, 2006 the Newfoundland and Labrador Section of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, in partnership with the Town of Clarenville and The Clarenville Heritage Society, presented an IEEE Electrical Engineering Milestone The 50th Anniversary of the Commissioning of Transatlantic Cable Number 1 (TAT-1). The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) is the world's largest professional association for the advancement of technology. Its program of "Milestones in Electrical Engineering and Computing" honours significant achievements in the history of electrical and computer engineering. There are only 70 of these milestone sites in the world; six are in Canada and three are in Newfoundland. (1) The first successful transatlantic telegraph cable, in 1866, is commemorated in Hearts Content, (2) the reception of the first wireless signal across the Atlantic by Marconi at Signal Hill in 1901 (3) Clarenville as the eastern terminal of TAT-1 which entered service on September 25, 1956.
