Arts Under the Stars 2008

Arts Under the Stars is a summer festival of free arts performances at the Elizabeth Swan Park, Tilley’s Road, Clarenville.  For Summer 2008, the performances will take place on Thursdays, July 10 – August 28 at 7:30 p.m.  This year features an eclectic mix of arts performers, everything from belly-dancing to story-telling to song-writers!

Special thanks to the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council for their outstanding support of Arts Under the Stars through their Community Arts Program. Arts Under the Stars is also sponsored by the following outstanding local businesses:  Scotiabank, Clarenville Lion’s Club, Pepsi, Rotary Club of Clarenville, Drs. Dean and Debbie Halleran, Optometrists, Hatch Mott Macdonald, Mills Hussey Pittman, College of the North Atlantic and the Town of Clarenville (sponsors as of May 25, 2008).

In case of rain, the performances will be held at the College of the North Atlantic, Pleasant Street, Clarenville.  The decision whether performances are inside or outside is made in the early afternoon on the day of the performance.  Check this website or phone the Town Hall at 466-7937 to determine location if the weather is questionable.  So bring a lawn chair or blanket (bleachers also available) and enjoy the night!

Thursday, July 10 - Hey Rosetta!
Based in St. John’s, NL, the six-piece group is comprised of Tim Baker (vocals/piano/guitar), Adam Hogan (guitar), Josh Ward (bass), Phil Maloney (drums), Kinley Dowling (violin), and Romesh Thavanathan (cello). Riding on the waves of their acclaimed live show & the stellar Plan Your Escape EP, Hey Rosetta! surges forward with their latest release Into Your Lungs (And Around In Your Heart And Through Your Blood).  www.heyrosetta.com

Thursday, July 24 - Dale Jarvis
Dale Gilbert Jarvis is a performer who has been telling stories since 1992. Dale is one of a few professional storytellers in the province and has performed at a variety of events, conferences, luncheons, benefits, and at local and international festivals.  Join Dale has he tells stories of the faerie folk, tales from the collections of the Brothers Grimm, ghost stories, legends and traditional tales from Newfoundland, Ireland, the United Kingdom and beyond.  www.hauntedhike.com/dale_jarvis.htm
Thursday, July 31 - Sherry Ryan
Sherry’s debut album Bottom of a Heart (2005) earned national attention, extensive radio play and showcases across Canada and the US. She was named Newfoundland & Labrador Female Artist of the Year for 2006 and her song "One of Those Amazing Nights" was nominated for SOCAN Song of the Year.  Join this gifted lyricist and her band as they take a personal experience and make it universal.  www.sherryryan.com

Thursday, August 7 – The Neighbourhood Strays Bellydance Troupe
The Neighbourhood Strays are a gypsy-style bellydance troupe who perform Atseguin (Eastern European Gypsy) bellydance with influences from American Tribal, Egyptian, Turkish, Middle Eastern, Indian, and other forms of dance.   This group has received excellent reviews from audiences and students!  Come learn about the art of belly-dancing and give it a whirl yourself! www.theneighbourhoodstrays.com
Thursday, August 14 - Cowan Mountain Boys
From country waltz to burnin’ bluegrass, join the Cowan Mountain Boys for an unforgettable evening.  Featuring guitar, mandolin, vocals, banjo and stand-up bass, this group began their trade in the church basement/downtown folk-bluegrass scene in Montreal raising many a believer from their seat before heading back to Newfoundland!
Thursday, August 21 - Laundry and Bourbon
New Curtain Theatre presents the play Laundry and Bourbon by James McLure.  Elizabeth, Hattie and Amy Lee come together in an afternoon of laundry folding, tv watching, bourbon sipping and gossip for an intimate look at open secrets and conversation that is so much a part of small town life.
Thursday, August 28 - Brad Hodder
Join Brad Hodder and friends for some sketch comedy.  It will be an unpredictable evening but one guaranteed to make you laugh!

Arts Under the Stars is encouraging community, not-for-profit groups to apply to sell concessions during the performances.  For an applications form, please contact Lisa Browne at lisabrowne2005@hotmail.com.  This will be great fund-raising or promotion-raising opportunity!
